Why Easter Makes Life Make Sense: How Resurrection Sunday Gives Life Meaning and Purpose

Updated: May 3

Why the meaning of Easter makes life make sense and Resurrection Sunday gives life meaning and purpose; cloudy sky with flowers and stone path

As Bible-believing Christians, we rely on God's Word to help us make sense of every area of our lives, from the emotional and spiritual to the profoundly practical.

But, have you ever thought about how the empty tomb of Easter (or more accurately called Resurrection Sunday), also gives meaning and purpose to every area of our lives?

The resurrection of Jesus impacts us in many significant ways:

1.)  Resurrection Sunday Gives Purpose to Our Suffering

Since the Fall of man and the entrance of sin into our world, we all face difficulties, sorrows, trials, and tribulations. That sin would leave us helpless if God hadn’t sent a Savior to rescue us.

When Jesus died on the cross on the day we now call Good Friday, His final words were, “It is finished.” It may have seemed that all hope was lost as He breathed His last and succumbed to the agony of death by crucifixion:

“Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.” (John 19:30)

The Resurrection of Jesus Gives Us Hope in Trials

Yet, amid the most extreme act of cruelty, injustice, and suffering ever experienced, God used the death of His Son, our Lord Jesus, to defeat sin, death, and suffering forever!

He doesn’t let any of our suffering go to waste, either. Instead, as He promises us in Romans 8:28, He uses it all for His glory and our good:

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

There is hope in our trials and purpose in our pain.

2.) Resurrection Sunday Gives the Hope of New Beginnings

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Because Jesus did not stay in the grave, the empty tomb and His resurrection give us hope of a new beginning once we trust Him alone for our salvation. That means that no matter what we have done or what we experience in this life, it is only temporary. When we confess and repent of our sins, we have God’s promise of forgiveness:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

We also have an eternal hope that can never be taken from us. One day all of this pain, sorrow, and suffering will end, and we will only know perfect peace and joy in the presence of our Savior!

3.) Resurrection Sunday Gives Our Lives Purpose and Meaning

The Bible answers all of life’s big questions, like “Why are we here?”, “How do we live?”, “Where are we going?”, and “How do we get there?” And Jesus’s resurrection is the answer to most of those questions.

God created us to have a relationship with Him forever. How amazing that the Creator of the universe wanted us to have fellowship with Him! That alone gives our lives significant meaning and purpose.

Yet, because of sin, that relationship was broken and we needed a rescue plan to restore that fellowship. God provided that in our Savior, Jesus! When we trust in His perfect life and finished work on the cross to pay for our sin debt, God credits Jesus’s perfect righteousness to us and takes our sins to the cross where they were crucified with Jesus. When He rose again from the dead, on Resurrection Sunday, He defeated sin, death, and the devil forever!

Sharing the Resurrection of Jesus is Our Mission

This is wonderful news! But now we have a responsibility. Because God sent Jesus to save us, we are also sent to the world to share this Good News with others:

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” (John 20:21)

Of course, God doesn’t need us to carry out His plan, but we have been given the awesome privilege and honor of partnering with Him in this mission. That is how Resurrection Sunday gives our lives purpose and meaning! What could be more important than bringing the hope of eternal life to others?!

No matter what vocation God has called us to in this life, we all have the over-arching task of glorifying Him and sharing the Gospel with everyone we can, so they, too, can have forgiveness and the hope of eternal life in Christ.

And that is how Resurrection Sunday makes life make sense!
